Classic Recording Studios: Location Recorders

Though based in New York City, Location Recorders’ home was on the road. It was a mobile truck, pulled by a semi, that housed an eight-track and two sixteen track 3M recorders and cost a quarter million dollars to build (a hefty price at the time of its launch).

Location was popular with a long list of rock acts including Jefferson Airplane, Love, Traffic, The Band and Mountain. In 1971, using closed circuit TV cameras to monitor the stage, Location recorded Grand Funk live at Shea Stadium.
